For the last couple of months, Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg had face criticism from the users, regulators, lawmakers, and prosecutors for not ensuring the privacy of the users’ data. Facebook was alleged in mishandling the users’ profile information. A few months back it was revealed that a British political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica had taken and distorted 50 million Facebook users’ data in an illicit way.
After keeping silence on this controversy, Mark Zuckerberg said in a post that they will inform users who’s data was misused by Cambridge Analytica apps. It was revealed in an interview that Aleksandr Kogan developed the psychological-profiling quiz app and paid about 270,000 users to take part in. Later Cambridge Analytica misused the information from the app for about 50 million Facebook users. Also, the app obtained the data of user’s friends too including those who never installed or accept the confirmation of the app.
After such embarrassing problems, Zuckerberg made an apology statement-
“I want to share an update on the Cambridge Analytica situation — including the steps we’ve already taken and our next steps to address this important issue.
We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.”
In his statement, he talks about all the data security issues and about it fixes. We know it takes a longer time to fix all the Facebook holes that need an instant solution. Mark Zuckerberg promised on a television network that they will work to secure the users’ data and prohibit any interference of outsider enterprises, companies, or apps and built the better service over the long term.
He said “We already took the most important steps a few years ago in 2014 to prevent bad actors from accessing people’s information in this way. But there’s more we need to do-
He elaborated his steps that have taken to secure the platform which includes investigating all the apps that have access to a large amount of information, restrict developers data access and, adding the privacy setting tool at the top of the news feed to make sure everyone sees it.
Ahead from those steps, Mark Zuckerberg also stated that “had already taken in 2014, I believe these are the next steps we must take to continue to secure our platform.”
