Facebook Will Have More ‘Zombie’ Profiles Than Living Ones By 2070

Depending on the data of Facebook, by the end of 2070, the dead users’ profiles will outnumber the living on Facebook, and the social media website could be a virtual crypt by the end of the century.

As per the reports, the number of dead users on Facebook could range from 1.4 billion to 4.9 billion by the end of 2100.  Most of these zombie profiles will originate from India because of the nation’s excessive population, and the United States because of its prevalence use.

Carl Öhman, a doctoral competitor, said in a statement, “these statistics give rise to new and difficult questions around who has right to all this data, how should it be managed in the best interests of the families and friends of the deceased and its use by future historians to understand the past”.

Estimating The Dead

As everybody knows Facebook is the biggest social media network across the globe. As of March, the company claimed 2.38 billion users who had signed in once in the previous month and 1.56 billion had signed on a daily basis. Öhman and his co-writer David Watson examine Facebook’s data from the end of 2018, which put the number of monthly active users at 1.43 billion. The Facebook data included nationality and self-revealed users’ ages.

After the complete research, researchers extrapolated the death rate of users based on United Nations mortality information. They discovered that more than 500 million will be dead by 2060, 1 billion will be passed by 2079, and approx 98% of the present monthly active users will be dead by 2100.

Those numbers look forward to new user growth after 2018, which is unrealistic, as per the recent reports, the company claimed that any of them have signed in. To locate the other, researchers highlight a scenario in which Facebook grows by 13 percent each year until everyone in the world is on the site. Additional living users mean, eventually, increasingly dead users. Under those assumptions, Facebook is littered with the virtual gravestones of 4.9 billion people by 2100. In that scenario, the dead count won’t exceed the living until the early part of the 22nd century.

History In The Making:

Both the situations are implausible, researchers noted on their reports distributed on April 27 in the journal. The genuine number of dead users will probably fall between those two boundaries. In the situation where Facebook extends into every corner of the globe,  16% of dead profile have originated from India, whereas Nigeria pursues with 6%, then Indonesia and Pakistan with 4% and 3.6%. The United States is the only Western country which comes in the top 10 at 7th number with 2.3% of complete zombie profiles.

Other social media sites will encounter the same situations, the researchers noted.  One of the researchers said in a statement that the profiles will show authentic data in mankind’s history. He said, ” Facebook should invite historians, archivists, archaeologists, and ethicists to participate in the process of curating the vast volume of accumulated data that we leave behind as we pass away.” He also added, ” this is not just about finding solutions that will be sustainable for the next couple of years, but possibly for many decades ahead.
